K. Qt. Etruscus--
Back-to-back weekend reenactment is not something we can typically do, but this time we could and we visited the greater Philadelphia region twice: last week for the "Founding of Rome" (see previous blog post) and this time for a school function. Yesterday, Saturday, April 25th, Legion XIII, consisting again of Albina, Gerbulo, and Etruscus, was very happy to be a part of the New Jersey Junior Classical League convention at a high school in south-western Jersey. There were lot of activities going on for the students throughout the day and we were glad to be a part of it. Our organization, Joe Balmos's "A Day in Ancient Greece" (doing Roman), and another citizen focusing on the later Roman Empire were the living history contingent of what was a very extensive high school program. We were also joined up a little later with another Roman legionary, Nico, who added to our display and efforts.
We had an on-going display on a couple tables in the cafeteria and gave two dedicated half-hour talks on the Roman military in a separate classroom which had a stage. Later, Senator Etruscus was particularly surprised and glad to signal the start of an inter-school 'chariot race' where the students made their own chariots and pulled them across the field, racing against each other for the resounding glory of their respective schools. Toward the end of the day we wrapped up one of the students who won a position within the NJJCL in the senator's toga--albeit not for very long since it can be oppressively hot under spotlights under normal conditions! (Ah, but such is the heavy burden of power!)
We have fun and interesting weekends, really is true. We want to thank Ms. Pearlman and Ms. Kubichek and all the staff, volunteers, and parents who helped make the convention a success. We also hope that the students enjoyed our displays and talks as much as we enjoyed being a part of their program.
