Just two days after the traditional founding of Rome, Legion XIII Gemina joined up with "A Day In Ancient Greece" by Joe Balmos and Legion XX's Richard & Allison Campbell at the NJ Junior Classical League convention in Basking Ridge. Last year we attended the NJJCL and we were very happy to be invited back again this time around. Unfortunately, we had two casualties, reducing Legion XIII's numbers to three: Albina, Gerbulo, and Etruscus, but nevertheless, we set up our military display of civilian life and military life, with an emphasis on the Augustan legionary and military tribune. Legion XX is geared towards the invasion and occupation of Britannia, so they showed off the later elements such as lorical segmentata and equipment more towards the era of Claudius and Nero. The Campbell's "caupona", or set-up street stand, was a big hit, as was Joe's display of various wearable Greco-Roman helmets, swords, as well as Minotaur and Nemean Lion heads for the students.
We put on two lectures on the Roman army and its development, each 45 minutes long. Like last year, we were also very happy to give the signals to start the students' home-made chariot race and cheer them on. All in all, a big success. Afterwards, we went out to an Italian restaurant and wrapped up a lovely evening.
