K. Qt. Etruscus--
On September 1st, Albina and I went to Ringwood Manor in northern New Jersey to do a photoshoot with Dragoon Photography in our Roman attire. We got some great pictures and you can see some of them here.
Miles Aetius is being sent off to Texas (a distant barbarian province on the edge of the known world) for the foreseeable future as new prospects have opened for him there. So, on September 4th, Albina and I met with him before his departure. Because he was one of our very first members, and, indeed, Legio XIII Gemina could not have materialized without him and his support, he was awarded a commemorative coin to thank him for his camaraderie and all his help. Once he is settled in, there's no doubt he will rally to the eagle once again and serve the empire in that province, and he will always have our gratitude and friendship, welcome here should he return some day.
The Ancients Alive; A Celebration of Classical Antiquity event is fast approaching and there are a lot of things going on. I'm very pleased that we've been able to get a strong response from the ancient reenactment community to come and support this, our first event being held at Locust Lawn in New Paltz, NY. As it stands, we have Romans, Greeks, and barbarians coming, soldiers and civilians. I am looking forward to this immensely and will be very eager to see how everything comes together. A lot of work has gone into it, and so much is owed to Dawn Elliott for all her help and effort throughout this process. Without her, we could not have this event at all.
Roman food is something which ought to be of particular interest to participants and spectators alike. Our modern diet is very different from what our ancestors two thousand years ago were used to. Taste, of course, is a very strong sense and one of our most primal. The "flavor profile" of then and now might be a little jarring, perhaps, but the idea is to learn, explore, and get the feel of things. How better to experience life in the past than by trying what they ate? Even if it is something totally alien, an open mind and a courageous attitude might just open one up to a whole new aspect of understanding.
